Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli has said that the humiliating 6-1 defeat against Spain had caught him by surprise and that he was a strong swoop against them.

Last night in Madrid, Argentina equaled its black record for the deepest loss in history when Spain scored six times in a friendly match, where Real Madrid midfielder Isco shone with a hattrick.

Argentina – who played without Lionel Messi’s cause for injury – had beaten Italy 2-0 on Friday, but Spain turned out to be too strong on Tuesday night.

Sampaoli has admitted that there is much work to be done to make sure he does not suffer similar embarrassment at the 2018 World Cup.

“We have to take responsibility for this game, these things must not happen to us in the World Cup,” Sampaoli said.

“Spain sped on us. We have to keep up with work, “he added.
