Djokovic in history, Federer is humbled in Cincinnati

Former tennis world number one Novak Djokovic has become the first tennis player to win the entire Masters 1.000 tournament, triumphing to Roger Federer in Cincinnati.

31-year-old Serbia, 5-time finalist of the tournament, beat 7-time Champion Federer 6-4, 6-4, breaking a curse because it was defeated in the 3 previous finals against the Swiss.

For Federer it was the chance to reach the 99th career triumph and to lead the 23-23 balance of confrontations with the Serbian rival.

However, Djokovic had exerted constant pressure from the beginning, while advancing in 4-3 lead and then winning the first 6-4 set. Federer kicked off the second set, advancing 2-0 ahead of Djokovic’s reaction, equalizing and then taking the 4-3 lead, before closing it all again 6-4.

“It’s a very special moment. It’s the first time I win a trophy in Cincinnati, “Djokovic said after his first triumph.

Now Djokovic, back in perfect shape after a long absence, wants to triumph even at US Open, where he won 2 times the trophy./Flashsport24
