UEFA makes the decision: VAR in the Champions League next season

UEFA’s Executive Committee meeting today decided to approve the use of video assistent referee(VAR) in the Champions League, starting from the 2019-2020 season. In addition, it was decided that the VAR also be put into use in “EURO 2020”, in the 2020-2021 season of “Europa League” (from the group stage and onwards) and in the final of the European Supercup of 2021 .

Alexander Ceferin, president of UEFA, said: “We are convinced that the introduction of the VAR in August 2019 will give us enough time to establish a solid system. We will train judges to ensure a successful and successful VAR implementation in the Champions League, the most important competition in the world. ”

In January, the top European football governing body had requested care and no hesitation in introducing the VAR to the UEFA-run races: “In my opinion, it is too early to set it as a rule.” So far, the presence of the VAR was still limited to small tournaments of FIFA and some league such as Germany, Italy and Portugal. It seems that the success of technology in the recent World Cup (“Russia 2018”) has encouraged UEFA to accelerate the pace in this regard. This, even at the request of European clubs.
