Kyle Edmund took first place as Britain’s No. 1, which was held by Andy Murray for 12 years

The 500 points scored by winning the Dubai Championship last year were ripped off with first place in the UK, ATP Rangers show Edmund 24 while Murray with 29

It is the first time since July 2006, when a 19-year-old Murray overtook Greg Rusedski after reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon, that the Scot has not been British No 1.

“It’s humble to become the British number and, perhaps unintentionally, as Andy has fallen in the rankings because of his injury,” said Edmund, who made the Australian Open semi-finals.

The damage he suffered last year and kept Murray away from Wimbledon made him lose top rankings

“As proud as I am, I would have been much happier had Andy stayed healthy and occupied his place at the very top where he belongs.

“Wishing Andy a speedy recovery and I hope to battle it out with him in a more legitimate fashion in years to come. I’ll continue to work hard and represent Great Britain as best as I can.”

Edmund has had injury problems of his own recently, missing Britain’s Davis Cup tie against Spain with a hip issue and later being forced out of clay-court events in Buenos Aires due to illness.

The 23-year-old has now recovered and is set to make his return to the ATP Tour at the upcoming BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the first Masters tournament of the season.
